The Hype for Squid Game Season 2

Squid Game: Season 2 | Cast Announcement | Netflix

After becoming Netflix's most-watched original show ever, Squid Game season 2 promises even more twisted competitions and deadly games. Squid Game season 1 focused on a group of everyday people invited to take part in the titular event, a secretive competition that carries grave consequences for its losers. Those selected all carry heavy financial burdens to bear, the type of debt that can make life one big ball of stress. Despite the likelihood of death, if winning the game can make their lives less of a living hell, the contestants are on board.

The Latest Squid Game Season 2 News

Squid Game burst onto the scene and was instantly beloved by both critics and viewers, then rode massive amounts of positive word of mouth to Netflix viewership records. Following its success, Netflix is looking to make Squid Game into a broader universe, with multiple spin-offs in development. It's no surprise that Squid Game season 2 is coming, it's only a matter of how long viewers will have to wait.

The biggest Squid Game season 2 news is that eight new competitors have been announced for the sophomore installment, though little has been revealed about their actual characters. Actors Park Gyu-Young, Jo Yu-Ri, Kang Ae-Sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-Uk, Choi Seung-Hyun, Roh Jae-Won, and Won Ji-An have all been added to the Squid Game season 2 cast. Other Squid Game season 2 news indicated that filming is finally underway for the next chapter. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said that there was a lot of stress about getting the first season made, and he wanted a break before starting the second season. That break seems to be ending, as he has said that the second season has a new production start date. Production on the second season began in July 2023 and was slated to last for 10 months (via What's On Netflix).

Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed Squid Game season 2 is happening. Much of the appeal in season 1 came from the challenges the contestants faced, and Dong-hyuk promises more deadly games in Squid Game season 2. Whether Squid Game season 2 will feature entirely new games or a mix of old and new remains to be seen.

Squid Game Season 2 Cast and Story

The Squid Game season 2 cast has already been partially confirmed, including one character whose fate was left uncertain in the first Squid Game season. A casting video debuted at the Netflix Tudum event and shows the surviving cast members from season 1 will be back for season 2. This includes Lee Jung-Jae as Seong Gi-hun, Lee Byeong-Heon as Hwang In-ho, Wi Ha-Joon as Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the person who recruits participants for the game.

Squid Game season 1's ending definitely left the door open for a sequel, although many wondered if the setup would be vastly different and not focus as much on the actual game. Sole surviving protagonist Gi-hun seemingly opts to try and take down the organization behind Squid Game rather than move on with his daughter, and it's unlikely he would willingly participate in the game again, even if baited by Squid Game's resident recruiter. However, there's always a way for dystopian organizations like this to force compliance, so perhaps Gi-hun's daughter will be used to bait him back into the game. Squid Game's complex in-universe creator Il-nam is also apparently dead, which may lead to an even less fair game than before. Since the Squid Game season 2 plot will also see the return of Jun-Ho to the cast it could be that he survived his brother's bullet and that the Front Man's intention was never to kill his brother, but rather, to save him.
