Scarlett Johansson Takes Legal Measures as AI App Replicates Her Image

Scarlett Johansson, renowned for her roles in The Avengers and beyond, is pursuing legal action against Lisa AI, an AI app accused of replicating her image without her consent However, Johansson is not the sole target of such celebrity AI voice cloning

Scarlett Johansson, renowned for her roles in The Avengers and other films, has initiated a legal battle against the AI app, Lisa AI. The app had unlawfully replicated her image without her consent, highlighting the ongoing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and its effects on various industries. Following the WGA Strike, which aimed to address AI-related safeguards, Johansson joins the ranks of the first celebrities taking legal action against an AI application.

Johansson, renowned for portraying Black Widow in Marvel movies, has recently taken a stand against Lisa AI. This application is recognized for its ability to generate images, similar to DALL-E, with a particular focus on transforming them into vintage American yearbook-style visuals, specifically tailored to individuals' faces.

The legal dispute arises from Lisa AI's unauthorized use of clips featuring Johansson from the backstage of Black Widow, deceitfully presenting her as a spokesperson by mimicking her voice. In an attempt to circumvent the lack of consent, Lisa AI included a brief disclaimer:

“Images produced by Lisa AI. It has nothing to do with this person.”

The advert has since been scrubbed from the internet.

Johansson isn’t the only victim of celebrity AI voice cloning

Sony Pictures

Using AI to clone voices is not a new phenomenon. Tom Hanks encountered an unauthorized usage of his likeness in an advertisement for a dental plan, which led to legal proceedings. To clarify his non-involvement, Hanks took to social media to disassociate himself from the company.

Drake is another significant figure entangled in AI adventures. A collaboration between The Weeknd and Drake, which gained widespread popularity, featured an AI clone. Surprisingly, none of the individuals singing on the track were actually involved in its creation. This submission was also considered for an award at the Grammys.

AI has evolved beyond the realm of celebrities and is now being used by scammers to mimic the voices of loved ones or acquaintances. There have been instances where individuals have utilized AI-generated images of a woman to deceive people on Reddit.

As an enthusiastic fan of Scarlett Johansson, I am deeply troubled by the unauthorized replication of her image by the AI app, Lisa AI. It is a blatant violation of her privacy and intellectual property rights. The fact that the app used clips from the backstage of Black Widow to make it appear as if she was endorsing the app is particularly egregious. This is not just a matter of financial loss for Johansson, but also a violation of her personal and professional integrity.

I am glad that Johansson is taking legal action against Lisa AI. This sends a strong message to other companies that they cannot simply use celebrities' images and voices without their consent. It is important to protect the rights of artists and performers, and to ensure that AI technology is used in a responsible and ethical manner.
