The popular horror franchise, IT, is set to receive a prequel TV series, titled Welcome to Derry. Here's everything we know about the highly anticipated show.

Renowned author Stephen King originally published his novel, It, in 1986. Over the years, the haunting tale of Pennywise the clown has solidified its place as one of the most iconic horror stories ever told.

After its initial debut in 1990, the character made a comeback in the form of two successful films titled It: Chapter 1 and It: Chapter 2. The positive reception from both critics and audiences contributed to their commercial success. Although there is no official announcement regarding a third film, there is a prequel spin-off TV series currently being developed. Now, let's dive into all the available information about this exciting prequel series.

Welcome to Derry release date: When is it coming out?

While there’s no specific release date for the It prequel series Welcome to Derry, we do know it will debut at some point in 2025.

According to a new report from Variety, the HBO 2024 slate has been hit with some pretty significant delays, meaning shows like Welcome to Derry are receiving extra delays.

We’ll be sure to keep this section updated as and when new information comes in.

Welcome to Derry plot: What’s it about?

It was reported by Variety that the upcoming show "Welcome to Derry" will be set in the 1960s and will provide a backstory leading up to the events depicted in IT: Chapter 1. The series is said to delve into the origins of Pennywise the clown and explore how he emerged and inflicted terror upon the town and its people.

Welcome to Derry cast: Who’s in it?

As of now, there is no concrete information available about the plot of the show. We will update this section as soon as more details become accessible. The release of the show is scheduled on HBO Max's revamped streaming platform Max.

HBO Max recently welcomed four new cast members in April 2023, although specific details about their characters have not been disclosed. According to a report from Variety, the talented additions include Taylour Paige from the film "Zola," Jovan Adepo from the series "Watchmen," Chris Chalk from "Perry Mason," and James Remar known for his role in "Dexter."

No character details are available at the moment, but since the show takes place before the events of the first It film, it's unlikely that we will see any of the original Losers Club returning. While the identity of the menacing villain Pennywise remains unknown, there are rumors that Bill Skarsgård may reprise his role. Behind the scenes, the show, which started filming in March 2022, will be executive-produced by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. Andy Muschietti brings significant experience to the franchise, having directed the 2017 and 2019 films IT: Chapter 1 and IT: Chapter 2.

As well as this, it was confirmed that Jason Fuchs will serve as a co-showrunner for the project alongside Brad Caleb Kane.

Editor's P/S

As a passionate fan of the IT franchise, I am thrilled about the upcoming prequel TV show, Welcome to Derry. The original IT novel and films captivated me with their intricate storytelling and the sheer terror they evoked. The town of Derry has always been a fascinating setting, and I can't wait to delve deeper into its dark secrets and the origins of Pennywise the clown.

The prequel series has the potential to enrich the IT universe significantly. By exploring the events leading up to the first film, it can provide a deeper understanding of the characters and their motivations. I am particularly interested in learning more about Pennywise's origins and how he came to be the evil entity that haunts Derry. The 1960s setting also offers a unique opportunity to explore the social and cultural context of the time and how it influenced the town's dynamics.
